There are no beaches on this island but lots of art and spectacular panoramic views.  This island is has tried hard to preserve its relaxed feel and control commercial development.

• Calusa Heritage Trail - Tour an actual archeological site of the Calusa Indians.  Call for the times of guided tours or take a self guided tour which includes a history of the Calusa Indians and an explanation of their canals, burial mounds and daily life. http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/RRC/calusatrail.htm

• Matlacha Community Park - Watch the kids swing on the playground swings, try your luck fishing if you have your own equipment or enjoy watching others reel in their catch. http://www.leeparks.org/facility-info/facility-details.cfm?Project_Num=0173

• Matlacha Art Galleries - The colorful "Key West-like" downtown of Matlacha is right on Pine Island Road as you enter Pine Island.  Explore a few art galleries and enjoy an ice cream cone.

• Museum of the Islands - This small, two room museum gives you a unique look at the history and residents of the island.  Take a self guided tour with a recorded narrative of the museum contents and take some time to chat with the volunteer docent. http://www.museumoftheislands.com/
